On Wednesday, July 24, a citizen of Latvia was detained for transporting persons who illegally crossed the state border.

The border guards, in cooperation with State Police officials, stopped a BMW 316 car driven by a Latvian citizen in Krāslava. During the inspection of the documents, it was found that there were four persons of Asian origin in the cabin of the car without travel documents, as well as valid visas and residence permits.

Criminal proceedings have been initiated against a citizen of Latvia according to the second part of Article 285.1 of the Criminal Law of the Republic of Latvia for knowingly providing a person with the opportunity to reside illegally in the Republic of Latvia, if such an opportunity is provided to two or more persons.

The aforementioned persons may be punished with incarceration for a period of up to six years for the mentioned actions.

Third-country nationals are prevented from illegally crossing the state border in accordance with Cabinet Order No. 184 of March 12, 2024 "On the announcement of an enhanced operating regime of the border protection system".
