On Sunday, June 13, at the Grebneva Border Control Point, border guards detained a bribe-giver – a Serbian citizen tried to bribe the border guards by offering a bribe of 20 euros.
During the border check of persons crossing the state border, the border guards detected a Serbian citizen leaving Latvia by truck and trailer who wanted to cross the state border without valid International Vehicle Insurance Policies.
The driver gave to the border guards a document folder containing a 20 euro banknote, intended as a bribe to allow him to cross the state border with a car and a trailer without valid Vehicles International Insurance Policies and administrative sanctions imposed.
Criminal proceedings were initiated against a Serbian citizen, born in 1985, under Article 323(1) of the Criminal Law, the person was recognized as a suspect, but the criminal proceedings were transferred to the Eastern Latgale Prosecution Office for prosecution under the expedited procedure. In turn, in the Eastern Latgale Prosecution Office, the guilty person entered into an agreement with the Prosecutor on admission of guilt and a penalty, whereby the man, committed the criminal offense, will be fined in the amount of 10 minimum monthly salaries, i.e. 5 000 euros.
Bribery qualifies as a serious crime punishable in accordance with the Latvian Criminal Law by the deprivation of liberty for a period of up to five years, or temporary deprivation of liberty, or community service, or a fine in an amount of ten up to two thousand minimum wages specified in the Republic of Latvia.
