On Thursday, May 14, a Belarusian citizen, who attempted to bribe border guards, was detained at a Silene Border Control Point.
Carrying out the border check on persons and means of transport crossing the state border, the border guards identified that entering Latvia trailer of the driven by a Belarusian citizen truck had not been subjected to the State technical inspection in accordance with the established procedure.
In order an administrative violation protocol was not drawn up, the driver offered a bribe to the border guards in an amount of 10 euros.
Criminal proceedings were initiated for bribery pursuant to Article 323(1) of the Criminal Law and the criminal case file was sent to the Daugavpils Prosecutor's Office with a proposal to initiate criminal prosecution against the suspected Belarusian citizen, born in 1980. By the order of the Prosecutor of the Daugavpils Prosecutor's Office, a fine of 10 minimum monthly salaries was imposed on a man, i.e. 4 300 euros.
Bribery qualifies as a serious crime punishable in accordance with the Latvian Criminal Law by the deprivation of liberty for a period of up to five years, or temporary deprivation of liberty, or community service, or a fine in an amount of ten up to two thousand minimum salaries set by the Republic of Latvia.
