On Thursday, June 11, a Belarusian citizen, who attempted to bribe border guards, was detained at the Silene Border Control Point.
Carrying out the border check on persons crossing the state border, the border guards identified an entering Latvia Belarusian citizen, who put a 5 euro banknote on the car seat.
When he was asked by the border guards what the money was for, the man answered that for the border guards.
Criminal proceedings were initiated against the man, born on 1992, for bribery pursuant to Article 323(1) of the Criminal Law. While the person was subject of criminal liability at the Daugavpils Prosecutor's Office, entering into an agreement with the Public Prosecutor on the recognition of guilt and fine of 10 minimum monthly salaries, i.e. 4300 EUR, which will take effect within 10 days.
It should be noted that the travel and vehicle documents of the man were in order, but a bribe was given to cross the state border with food products, the import of which into the European Union is prohibited.
Bribery qualifies as a serious crime punishable in accordance with the Latvian Criminal Law by the deprivation of liberty for a period of up to five years, or temporary deprivation of liberty, or community service, or a fine in an amount of ten up to two thousand minimum salaries set by the Republic of Latvia.
