On Thursday, June 4, State Border Guard officials in Skrundaliena Parish, Daugavpils District, detained four Latvian citizens for smuggling tobacco products and seized 40 thousand NZ Gold cigarettes with Belarusian excise stamps.
Officials of the Silene Border Guarding Unit in Skrudaliena Parish in the border zone, about 950 m from the state border, detained two Latvian citizens moving four boxes wrapped in black polyethylene film, and a moment later two more Latvian citizens were detained for organizing and supporting the crime. In total, border guards seized 40,000 NZ Gold cigarettes with Belarusian excise stamps.
The border guards compiled reports of administrative violation for two persons in accordance with Article 194.1 LAVC (violation of the regime for the State border, frontier, border zone, border control or border crossing points).
Criminal proceedings were initiated pursuant to Article 190(1) of the Criminal Law (regarding the import into the territory of the Republic of Latvia or export from it of goods or other valuables subject to customs clearance, circumventing the customs control or concealing these goods from this control, or failing to declare, or utilizing fake customs or other documents, or in another illegal way (smuggling) committed to a significant extent). Persons are placed in a State Police Short-term Detention Facility.
