On Monday, May 11, State Border Guard officials in Piedruja Parish, Kraslava District, detained two Latvian citizens for smuggling tobacco products and seized 200 thousand NZ Gold cigarettes with Belarusian excise stamps.
Verifying information about the illegal movement of excisable goods, the State Border Guard officials detected a Volkswagen Golf Variant vehicle in Piedruja Parish, about 200 meters from the state border. During the inspection of the car, the border guards found 6 boxes wrapped in black polyethylene film in its luggage compartment, but not far from the car, about 35 meters from the bank of the Daugava River, 4 more boxes wrapped in black polyethylene film. In total, border guards seized 200 thousand NZ Gold cigarettes with Belarusian excise stamps.
Two Latvian citizens were detained in connection with the illegal movement of cigarettes. Criminal proceedings were initiated pursuant to Article 221(2) of the Criminal Law (regarding the illegal storage, movement (transportation) or disposal of alcoholic beverages or tobacco products, if it has been committed by a group of persons according to a prior agreement). Persons were placed in a State Police Short-term Detention Facility.
