On Tuesday, August 10, at the Pāternieki Border Control Point border guards detained a bribe-giver - Kazakh citizen, who gave a bribe to the border guards in the amount of 50 euros so that the officials, using their service position, would not pay attention to the insurance policies of his truck and semi-trailer and allow him to exit to the Republic of Belarus.
During the border check on persons and vehicles crossing the state border, the border guards detected a Kazakh citizen leaving Latvia, who intended to cross the state border with the truck and semi-trailer without valid Compulsory Vehicle Insurance (OCTA) policies.
The man gave a bribe to the border guards in the amount of 50 euros to cross the state border with the truck and semi-trailer without valid OCTA policies.
Criminal proceedings were initiated for giving a bribe under Article 323(1) of the Criminal Law and transferred, by expedited procedure, to the South Latgale Prosecution Office for the commencement of criminal prosecution against the Kazakh citizen. Prosecutor of the South Latgale Prosecution Office in agreement with the Kazakh citizen regarding the fine - a fine in the amount of 10 minimum wages specified in the Republic of Latvia, i.e. EUR 5 000, sent the criminal file to the Daugavpils Court within the agreement process.
Bribery qualifies as a serious crime punishable in accordance with the Latvian Criminal Law by the deprivation of liberty for a period of up to five years, or temporary deprivation of liberty, or community service, or a fine in an amount of ten up to two thousand minimum salaries set by the Republic of Latvia.
