On Thursday, February 8, at the Grebņeva Border Control Point, border guards detained a briber - giving a bribe of €20, a Moldovan citizen attempted to bribe border guards.

When carrying out border checks on persons and vehicles crossing the state border, border guards detected a Moldovan citizen entering Latvia with a car, who wanted to cross the state border with a car, which has not been subjected to a state technical inspection in accordance with specified procedures and was not covered by the compulsory civil liability insurance of vehicles (OCTA).

The man handed the border guards a passport containing €20 as a bribe to allow them to cross the border with a car that did not have a valid OCTA policy.

Criminal proceedings were initiated against the Moldovan citizen (born on 1973), for a bribery pursuant to Section 323(1) of the Criminal Law. The person was recognised as a suspect, the security measure - arrest - has been applied on the person. On Monday, 12 February, the criminal proceedings were handed over to the Easten Latgale Prosecution Office under urgent procedures for the initiation of criminal prosecution.

Bribery qualifies as a serious crime punishable in accordance with the Latvian Criminal Law by the deprivation of liberty for a period of up to five years, or temporary deprivation of liberty, or community service, or a fine in an amount of ten up to two thousand minimum salaries set by the Republic of Latvia.
