On Saturday, April 24, border guards stopped the illegal movement of cigarettes across the Latvian-Belarusian state border and pulled a raft with smuggled cigarettes from the Daugava River.
Officials of the Piedruja Border Guarding Unit of the Daugavpils Board of the State Border Guard, while carrying out border surveillance, noticed a raft on the Daugava that crossed the state border while floating along the river. Using a motorboat of the State Border Guard, the raft was stopped in Krāslava municipality. When inspecting the raft, the border guards established that it consisted of six boxes disguised and packed in black polyethylene film, which were connected together. 60 000 "Premjer" cigarettes with Belarusian excise stamps were found inside.
Criminal proceedings were initiated for smuggling committed on a significant scale under Article 190(3) of the Criminal Law.
