On Monday, May18 examining information on the illegal movement of excisable goods and carrying out search and prosecution measures, the border guards in Dagda Region detained a Latvian citizen, born in 1983, and seized 80 000 cigarette "NZ Gold" with Belarusian excise stamps.

 

Border guards of the Daugavpils Board of the State Border Guard, in cooperation with border guards of the Aviation Board of the State Border Guard, examining information regarding illegal movement of excisable goods, noticed an Opel Zafira car moving in Svariņi Parish, Dagda Region. The driver did not respond to the border guard's legal request to stop the vehicle and continued to move. Border guards launched the pursuit of the Opel Zafira, which resulted in the vehicle being blocked and stopped, but the driver - a Latvian citizen, born in 1983, without a valid driving license was detained. During the inspection of the car, the border guards found 6 packages wrapped in black polyethylene film. In total, border guards seized 80,000 cigarettes "NZ Gold" with Belarusian excise stamps.

The border guards drew up administrative violation protocols for the man according to Article 1495(5) of the LAVC (on a failure to comply with a person's repeated request to stop the vehicle (for fleeing), who is authorized to inspect the vehicle driver's documents) and according to Article 1494.(6)1) of the LAVC (for driving a vehicle if there is no driving licenсe (the vehicle driving licence has not been obtained according to the specified procedures or has been suspended).

The person was informed that according to jurisdiction the administrative case file will be sent to the Daugavpils Court and the Kraslava Police Station of the Latgale Region Board of the State Police.

Criminal proceedings have been initiated pursuant to Article 221(2) of the Criminal Law (regarding the illegal storage, movement (transportation) or disposal of alcoholic beverages or tobacco products, if it has been committed by a group of persons according to a prior agreement). The person was placed in the State Police Short-Term Detention Facility.
