On Thursday, 30 December 2021, in Augšdaugava municipality, two citizens and one non – citizen of the Republic of Latvia were detained for illegal movement of tobacco products, 100,000 smuggled cigarettes were confiscated.
During the inspection of information on illegal movement of tobacco products, border guards detained three persons in a farmstead in Naujiene parish, Augšdaugava municipality, who pulled out 10 packs of smuggled cigarettes from Daugava River and brought them to one of the farm buildings. Border guards found out that cigarettes had previously been smuggled across the state border from Belarus along the Daugava River.
In total, 100,000 “NZ Gold” cigarettes with Belarussian excide stamps were seized by the border guards.

Criminal proceedings have been initiated for smuggling in accordance with the Section 190 Paragraph 3 of the Criminal Law (regarding the illegal movement of tobacco products, which was committed in large quantities).
Moreover, throughout the inspection, the border guards noticed that one of the persons was wanted by the police. The person has been handed over to the State Police.
