On Thursday, January 19, in Daugavpils border guards detained one Latvian non-citizen for illegal movement of tobacco products and seized more than 50 thousand smuggled cigarettes.
Border guards of the Daugavpils Board of the State Border Guard in cooperation with the border guards of the Special Operations Service “Sigma” of the Aviation Board of the State Border Guard, checking information on illegal movement of cigarettes across the state border, in Daugavpils in the vicinity of a garage cooperative, detected two men, who moved several packages wrapped in black polyethylene film from the side of the railway sorting park and then loaded them into a Renault brand car that promptly drove off.
Shortly afterwards, the border guards stopped the car mentioned above, which was driven by the Latvian non-citizen, born in 1977. As a result of an inspection of the car, the border guards identified 10 rectangular packages wrapped in black polyethylene film in its luggage compartment.
In total, the border guards seized 50 000 cigarettes "Premjer" and 40 cigarettes "NZ Gold" with Belarusian excise stamps.
Criminal proceedings were initiated pursuant to Section 221(3) of the Criminal Law regarding the illegal movement (transportation) of tobacco products on a large scale. The offender was placed at a temporary place of detention.
