On Tuesday, July 14 in Robežnieki Parish of Kraslava Municipality border guards seized 60000 cigarettes "Premjer" with Belarusian excise stamps.
Officials of the Robežnieki Border Guarding Unit, while checking information on illegal movement of excisable goods, detained two Latvian citizens in Robežnieki Parish within the borderland, about 400 m from the state border, moving four packages wrapped in black polyethylene film. In total, border guards seized 60 000 "Premier" cigarettes with Belarusian excise stamps.
Criminal proceedings were initiated pursuant to Article 190(2) of the Criminal Law (for bringing in of goods or other valuables into the customs territory of the Republic of Latvia or taking out thereof, by avoiding customs control or concealing such goods or other valuables from such control, or not declaring such goods or other valuables, or using false customs or other documents, or in any other illegal way (smuggling), if it is committed on a significant scale by a group of persons according to a prior agreement. Detainees were recognised as suspects and were subjected to non-custodial measures.
Both mentioned persons are also a subject to administrative liability according to Article 36 of the Law on the State Border of the Republic of Latvia (for violation of the state border zone, borderland, border area or border crossing point regime).
