On Wednesday, September 11, border guards seized almost 23 000 contraband cigarettes in the Krāslava region.
While performing official duties and enhanced border surveillance, the border guards of the Daugavpils Board of the State Border Guard in Ūdriši Parish, on a forest road, inspected a Volkswagen Golf Variant car. It was established that the car was driven by a citizen of Latvia, but 15 meters from the car there was a bundle of contraband cigarettes "NZ" wrapped in a transparent polyethylene film.
In total, border guards seized 22 800 NZ cigarettes with Belarusian excise stamps.
Criminal proceedings were initiated against the person under Section 221(1) of the Criminal Law (illicit movements of tobacco products committed on a significant scale) and for the criminal offence commitment the Law provides punishment - the deprivation of liberty for a period of up to two years or temporary deprivation of liberty, or probationary supervision, or community service, or fine.
