On Friday, July 2, border guards removed 230 000 smuggled cigarettes in Daugavpils district.
Border guards of the State Border Guard Daugavpils Board suspended Volkswagen Sharan and Ford Galaxy brands cars that were operated by Latvian citizens, on suspicion of illegally transferring tobacco products to the motorway A6 Daugavpils in Līksna Parish. During car inspection, border guards identified cardboard boxes in their salons and luggage compartments with smuggled cigarettes “Premjer” – eight boxes in one car and 15 in the other.
In total, the border guards removed 230 000 cigarettes “Premjer” with Belarusian excise stamps.
Criminal proceedings have been initiated after Section 221, Paragraph three of the Criminal Law (regarding the illegal movement of tobacco products, which was committed in large quantities), and regarding this type of criminal offence the Law provides of imprisonment for up to five years or temporary imprisonment or forced labor, or with a fine, with or without confiscation of property, and with or without probation supervision for up to three years.
