On May 27-29, 2019, the Chief of the State Border Guard, General Guntis Pujāts was on a visit to Tbilisi (Georgia) where a meeting was held with the Heads of the Georgian Border Police, Patrol Police and Migration Department.
During the meeting with the officials of the Migration Department of Georgia bilateral co-operation issues were discussed, including the support of the Liaison Officer of the State Border Guard in Georgia for the establishment of the Migration Department. Agreement with the officials of the Patrol Police of Georgia was reached to update the exchange of information on detected forged travel documents and risk analysis information to combat illegal migration from Georgia to Latvia. While the representatives of the Border Police of Georgia pointed out, that they were interested in continuing effective co-operation with the State Border Guard on dog handling and border surveillance issues, as well as on the development of the Special Tasks Unit.
During the visit, the Chief of the State Border Guard also visited the Border Guarding Unit and the Border Crossing Point at the Georgian-Azerbaijani state border, where he got acquainted with the border surveillance model and border control procedures at the Border Crossing Point.
Also during his visit, General Pujāts visited the European Union Monitoring Mission (EUMM) Regional Office in Mtskheta, where he met with EUMM mission and office leadership, got acquainted with the specifics, results and challenges of the EUMM, and met with the State Border Guard officers performing their duties in EUMM mission.
The visit was organized in accordance with the Plan of Cooperation between the Structural Units of Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia Responsible for Border Protection and the State Border Guard of the Republic of Latvia for 2018-2019.
