On Thursday, May 24, the representatives of the State Border Guard participated in the European Border and Coast Guard Day, organized by the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (FRONTEX Agency), and related events in the Polish city of Sopot.
The purpose of the conference was to bring together representatives of the European Border and Coast Guard authorities to share their experience, knowledge and best practices on border control, and to strengthen and improve cooperation between Member States and border guards at European Union level.
The event was attended by high-level representatives from the European Commission, Border and Coast Guard authorities from all the Member States of the European Union as well as heads of European agencies and representatives from international organizations.
There was some discussions focusing on a wide range of topics on the control of the European Union external borders and the management of illegal migration flows.
The event, organized by the FRONTEX Agency, was more known as the European Day for Border Guards, but the new name of the event - European Border and Coast Guard Day, reflects the extended mandate and role of the Agency for the management of the European Union external borders. That is why the event took place in a seaside town Sopot to highlight the Agency's new responsibilities, which now also include Coast Guard functions.
In addition to the event, some films were demonstrated and several exhibitions were opened: National stands of law enforcement agencies of the European Union member states, photo exhibition and industrial exhibition.
In order to promote the Republic of Latvia and the State Border Guard, during the event some State Border Guard's and State Border Guard College's short films were demonstrated regarding the State Border Guard's activities, the training process of border guards, the dog handling service and the use of equipment.
During the event the participants were provided with answers to questions and information about the State Border Guard's activities, as well as with informational materials and souvenirs with the symbols of the State Border Guard of the Republic of Latvia and "Latvia 100", which were also used in the design of the national stand.
