On Monday, October 7, in Šķilbēni Municipality, border guards detained a Latvian citizen who illegally crossed the state border from the Russian side.

During an investigation, carried out in cooperation with the State Security Service (SSS), it was established, that the man had served in the Armed Forces of the aggressor country - Russia.

The State Border Guard initiated criminal proceedings against the person under Article 284(1) of the Criminal Law, i.e. for the intentional illegal crossing of the external state border.

While the SSS has initiated criminal proceedings against the person under Article 95.1 of the Criminal Law, i.e. for violation of prohibition of requirements of the National Security Law to serve in the Russian Armed Forces. According to the information available to the SSS, the person had concluded a military service contract with the Russian Armed Forces.

The investigation into these criminal proceedings is ongoing and the services will provide further information on its progress as the criminal proceedings develop.

The services remind that no person is considered guilty until his guilt has been recognized in accordance with the law.
