To protect the external border of Latvia and the European Union against the use of instrumentalisation of illegal migration, Minister for the Interior Marija Golubeva proposes to declare state of emergency in the border area of Latvia-Belarus. Final decision to declare the state of emergency will be made by the Cabinet of Ministers. State of emergency will be declared in municipalities of Augšdaugava and Krāslava and will extend the rights of State Border Guards to prevent illegal border crossing.

In recent days, Latvia has seen a surge of illegal border crossings from Belarus. This situation is connected to a decision of the Lithuanian Government to declare a special border guarding regime.

On Wednesday, August 11, Minister will visit the border area of Latvia-Belarus. For media inquiries, please contact Linda Curika, Strategic Communications Advisor to the Minister for the Interior. E-mail: linda.curika@iem.gov.lv, phone: 26533953.
