On February 6, 2025, a meeting with representatives of the FRONTEX Agency was organised in the State Border Guard and the Ministry of the Interior, during which the new FRONTEX Liaison Officer for cooperation with the Estonian, Latvian and Lithuanian authorities was introduced. New FRONTEX Liaison Officer has started his duties in Latvia from the beginning of 2025.
The Frontex Liaison Officer Bureau is established in Latvia since 2019 on the basis of the Memorandum of Understanding between the State Border Guard of the Republic of Latvia and the European Border and Coast Guard Agency regarding the hosting of a Liaison Officer in the Republic of Latvia, which was signed on March 27, 2019.
The main task of the FRONTEX Liaison Officer is to promote cooperation and dialogue between the FRONTEX agency and the Latvian authorities responsible for border management, return and coast guard functions in border control.
The State Border Guard intends to further develop the cooperation also with a new FRONTEX Liaison Officer, who will facilitate the rapid and direct exchange of information with the FRONTEX agency on the current state of play in the field of integrated border management in the country, as well as contribute to the fulfilment of Latvia’s obligations under the European Border and Coast Guard regulatory framework.
