On Thursday, July 25, a citizen of Ukraine was detained for transporting persons who illegally crossed the state border.
Border guards, in cooperation with State Police officials, stopped an Opel Zafira car driven by a Ukrainian citizen in Krāslava county. When the car was stopped, one person ran away and disappeared in the forest, while the documents of the other two passengers were found to be persons of African origin without travel documents, as well as valid visas and residence permits.
A criminal proceeding has been initiated against a citizen of Ukraine according to the second part of Article 285.1 of the Criminal Law for knowingly providing a person with the opportunity to stay illegally in the Republic of Latvia, if such an opportunity was provided to two or more persons.
Persons may be punished with deprivation of liberty for a period of up to six years for the mentioned actions.
Citizens of third countries are prevented from illegally crossing the state border in accordance with Cabinet Order No. 184 of March 12, 2024 "On the announcement of an enhanced operating regime of the border protection system".
