On Friday, August 2, two Romanian citizens were detained for ensuring 13 persons, who had illegally crossed the state border, with the possibility to reside illegally in the territory of Latvia.

During border surveillance, border guards in Krāslava Municipality detected 13 persons of Asian origin without travel documents, valid visas and residence permits, while nearby, border guards stopped an Iveco car with two Romanian citizens inside.

Criminal proceedings were initiated against the Romanian citizens under Article 2851(3) of the Criminal Law for knowingly ensuring a large number of persons, i.e. more than five persons in one case the possibility to reside illegally in the Republic of Latvia.

The mentioned offences are punishable by imprisonment of between two and eight years.

All the third-country citizens are stopped from illegally crossing the state border in accordance with the Cabinet Order No 184 of March 12, 2024 "Regarding Declaration of the Reinforced Operating Regime of the Border Guarding System".
